The public health nurse works as part of a team to provide essential public health services. She works with area physicians, health officers, educators and other public health nurses. These services include health promotion activities, such as adult health screenings, influenza vaccine clinics, child health immunizations and clinics, emergency preparedness for bioterrorism and pandemic flu, communicable disease investigations, and school immunization audits.

Public health professionals no longer have a myopic vision of diseases that threaten our public health. Now, any emerging disease in one part of the world, such as avian influenza, is as much a threat as if it happened in our own backyard. With the mobility of the world's population, diseases can travel as fast as an airplane can get them here. The threat of terrorism, whether chemical, biological, or nuclear, requires the public health nurse to continually learn and prepare for such an event. The field of Public Health is constantly changing, and the public health nurse is an integral part of a team of professionals that are at the forefront of these changes.
