Sean P. Canning is the 9th Chief of the Lincoln Park Police Department. Chief Canning was appointed Chief April 1, 2005.
Having been appointed in 1985 as a Patrol Officer. Other ranks and commands he has held have been; Detective in 1990, Detective Sergeant 1991, Patrol Sergeant 1993, Lieutenant in charge of Operations Division 2001, Captain 2003, Deputy Chief 2004 and finally acting Chief September 2004 until the appointment to Chief of Police.
Chief Canning is a strong proponent of Community Policing and public outreach as well as the "Broken Windows" theory of law enforcement. This was so successfully employed in New York City under Mayor Giuliani. This translates into enforcement of minor offenses before more major crimes and offenses become tolerated and permitted by a community at large.
Equally important is the advocating of community service. While all calls to the police department for service are not of equal emergency important. All calls for service made by a citizen ARE vitally important to the person who calls and should be treated as such.

Now that the winter is drawing on and to a close, the warmer weather and spring brings new challenges.
ATTENTION TEEN DRIVERS: - Over the past six months there have been several fatal accidents throughout Morris County and some more publicized cases throughout New Jersey. In several of the accidents failure to adhere to the Graduated Drivers License law contributed to the death of young people in addition to excessive speed as a factor.
Please know we want young drivers to enjoy their youth, enjoy their new responsibilities as drivers but please make good driving decisions, it really can be a matter of life or death. Below are the elements of New Jerseys Provisional Drivers License Laws.
Provisional driver license restrictions
- No driving between 12:01 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
- Passengers must be from your household. Only one additional person from outside your household is allowed in the vehicle.
- If you are at least 21 years old, there are no passenger or hour restrictions
- You can't use cell phones, hand held video games or any other hand held electronic device
D.A.R.E. - Our Community Policing Officers are starting the 16th year of D.A.R.E. in conjunction with the Lincoln Park Schools. It has been a tremendous relationship, which we are very proud of, and one that we know has touched the lives of many children, their parents and the officers.
Bicycle, Skateboarding and Rollerblading Helmet laws - Also with the warmer weather there will be several enforcement initiatives. The first will be the reminders to all youths under the age of 17 that when riding a bicycle, skateboard or rollerblading it is mandatory to wear a helmet. Many head injuries sustained each year can be prevented simply by using this equipment. In New Jersey, anyone under 17 years of age that rides a bicycle or is a passenger on a bicycle, or is towed as a passenger by a bicycle must wear a safety helmet. Parents should take extra care to ensure their children are properly equipped.
As always, your ideas are welcome. Feel free to contact the officers or myself with concerns you may have and help keep Lincoln Park the safe community we all strive for. Thank you.
As always the officers and I can be reached at 973-694-5533. My personal email at the police department is Chief Canning; for a listing of the other officers again please check the website.
