A Message from the Mayor: |
Roughly
three months into the enhancements to our recycling
program I am pleased to inform you that the program has
been a tremendous success.
Many of our goals for the program have been met
or exceeded.
Our
first goal was to decrease the amount of “tipping” fees
that we pay.
Tipping fees are paid on each ton of solid waste
that goes into our trash collection. Tipping fees
are in addition to collection fees
which are a fixed fee paid to our trash hauler.
Prior to the curbside pickups, many recyclables
were placed in residential trash and added to the weight
that was taken to landfills.
Last month we decreased our tipping fees by 37%
over the same time last year.
With the cost of tipping fees increasing another
5% in 2010 to nearly $100.00 per ton, this will provide
a significant savings going forward.
When we
instituted curbside pickup we averaged around 60 tons
per month of recyclables collected at the borough
recycling center.
Since the onset of curbside recycling we are
averaging more than twice that amount.
We had
set an immediate goal of 50% compliance with residents
participating in the curbside pickups.
We have figured that we have already achieved
80-85% compliance, and we are aiming for more.
In fact, compliance has been so great, that
we are expanding the program as of this
week to include WEEKLY curbside pickups of recyclables.
Enforcement of ordinances regarding the proper use of
the bulk compactor and elimination of the wood dumpster
at the Recycling Center have decreased our disposal of
these non-recyclable items from 85 tons to only 35 tons
this past month.
This represents a $4,500.00 monthly savings that
should continue forward.
In
response to your concerns about brush disposal,
Administration is currently negotiating with local
businesses to find a cost effective way of being able to
resume drop off of brush at the Recycling Center.
I hope to have more information on this in time
for Spring clean-ups.
As I
mentioned, we are currently at 80-85% compliance of
removing recyclables from our solid waste and would like
to do more. If
you are currently using the curbside pickup, thank you
for your efforts and please continue to do so.
If you haven’t yet joined the rest of the
community in this great initiative, please join us now.
If you have any questions regarding the recycling
program, please contact the Mayor’s or Administrator’s
office.
FYI,
currently, Route 2 is the most compliant route and
generates the largest amount of picked up recyclables.
