Domestic Partnership records are available from 2004 to present.

Vital records from May 1848 to May 1878 may be obtained from the State Archives.
The Archives also holds microfilm copies of birth from 1878-1923, marriages from 1879
Through 1940 and deaths from 1878 to 1940. These materials are available for in-person use only.

Only specific individuals can obtain a vital record:
The subject of legal age, the parents of the subject, a brother or sister of legal age with proof of the relationship such as their own birth certificate, spouse, the child of legal age showing proof of the relationship, the grandchild of legal age showing proof of the relationship, the legal representative with proper court documentation.

Required Identification:
For all certified copies, proper id is required; a birth certificate, a valid photo driver license showing your current address and signature. If a photo license is not available two of the following must be provided: a non photo drivers license, a vehicle registration card, a vehicle insurance card, a county id, a passport, or a copy of a utility bill showing your current address.

For a certified copy of a birth certificate:                                                                                        the requestor must supply the date of  birth, full name of the person, the mother's maiden name, the father's full name, the requestor's relationship to the person, number of copies needed, the requestor's current address and their signature.

For a certified copy of a domestic partnership:                                                                            the requestor must supply the date of partnership, the full name of each partner, the requestor's relationship to the couple, number of copies needed, the requestor's current address and their signature.

How to Apply for a Marriage License Application:
Please print out the marriage license application form or you may come into the office to obtain the form. You must make an appointment with the registrar in the town that the female applicant lives.

DO NOT sign the marriage application form before going to the local Registrar. You must sign the application, while under oath, in the presence of the issuing authority.

Where to apply:
1.     If the woman is a resident of New Jersey, submit the
        application in the municipality where either appliant lives.
2.     If the woman is not a New Jersey resident but the man is
        Submit the application in the municipality where he lives or visa versa.
3.     If neither is a New Jersey resident, submit the application
        In the municipality where the marriage will be performed.

Things to bring when applying for a marriage license:
1.     If you are divorced or have had a marriage annulled, please
        bring the divorce decree or the civil annulment documents.
2.     If your former spouse is deceased, please bring the death
        Certificate.
3.     A copy of your birth certificate, driver's license, passport
        or State I.D.
4.     Proof of your residency.
5.     Your Social Security card or Social Security number
6.     A witness (18 years or older) who knows both the bride & Groom
7.     A check or money order for $28.00.
 

There is a 72-hour waiting period before the license can be issued. The waiting period begins when the application is filed with the local Registrar.

Any documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

If the marriage license expires before being used, a new application must be made.

For a certified copy of a marriage license, the requestor must supply the date of marriage, the groom's full name, the bride's maiden name, the requestor's relationship to the couple, number of copies needed, the requestor's current address and their signature.

How to Apply for a Domestic Partnership
Affidavit:
Each partner in front of a notary must sign an Affidavit of Domestic Partnership. The affidavit is presented to any local Registrar to complete the Certificate of Domestic Partnership. An Affidavit of Domestic Partnership requires the applicants to provide their full names, date of birth, age, sex, and common residence.

Both applicants must present the completed Affidavit of Domestic Partnership and identification to a Notary Public and sign in the presence of the notary attesting that they meet the requirements for establishing a Domestic Partnership.

Requirements:
Each partner must be 18 years of age or older and 62 years of age and not related. They must have a common residence in New Jersey or other jurisdiction and one must be a member of NJ State Administered retirement system. Each must be responsible for the other's common welfare and basic living expenses and neither partner has been in a domestic partnership that was terminated less than 180 days, unless it was terminated due to the death of a previous partner.

Application:

Please print out and complete the civil union license application form. You may also get an application form at the Local Registrar’s office.

Do not sign the civil union application form before going to the Local Registrar. You must sign the application, while under oath, in the presence of the issuing authority.

Requirements for entering into a Civil Union:

For two people to establish a civil union in New Jersey, they must satisfy all of the following requirements:

1. Not be a party to another civil union, domestic partnership or marriage in this state or that is recognized by this state*;
2. Be of the same sex ; and
3. Be at least 18 years of age, except that applicants under 18 may enter into a civil union with parental consent. Applicants under age 16 must obtain parental consent and have the consent approved in writing by any judge of the Superior Court, Chancery Division, Family Part.

* Same sex couples who meet the above requirements and are registered as domestic partners may enter into a civil union with the same person without terminating their domestic partnership first.  If the domestic partnership was registered in New Jersey, it automatically terminates when the civil union is registered. If the domestic partnership was registered in another state, that state’s laws determine the impact on the domestic partnership. A couple that has previously entered into a civil union or a same-sex marriage shall apply for a Reaffirmation of Civil Union License.

Where to apply:

1.       You may apply in the New Jersey municipality in which either person resides.  The license is valid throughout the state.

2.       If neither applicant lives in New Jersey, submit the application in the municipality where the civil union ceremony will be performed.  The license is only valid in the issuing municipality.

What you should bring with you when you apply for a Civil Union license:

1.       If you are divorced, have had a previous civil union dissolved, domestic partnership terminated or have had a civil union annulled, please bring the decree(s) or the civil annulment documents.

2.       If your former spouse/civil union or domestic partner is deceased, please bring the death certificate,

3.       A copy of your birth certificate, driver’s license, passport or state I.D.

4.       Proof of your residency.

5.       Your social security card or social security number.*

6.       A witness, 18 years of age or older.

7.       The $28 application fee.

*Your social security number is required by law and will be kept confidential.

The Civil Union license application is valid for six months from the date accepted, unless the Registrar has given prior approval to extend the validity of the application to a maximum of one year.

Only one Civil Union license may be granted from a Civil Union application. If the license expires before being used, a new application must be made and another $28 fee remitted.

The only exception to this requirement is in the case where a civil and religious ceremony are to be performed on the same day. In this case, the Local Registrar will photocopy the Civil Union application, marking one “A” and one “B”, and issue the corresponding Civil Union licenses, marking them “A” and “B” as well. One copy will be used for the religious ceremony and the other for the civil ceremony.
